Jitter Features

Video

Although the Jitter architecture is general, it is highly optimized for use with video data, and performs with breathtaking speed. A robust set of mathematical operators, keying/compositing, analysis, colorspace conversion and color correction, alpha channel processing, spatial warping, convolution-based filters, and special effects deliver the building blocks for your own custom video treatments.

Jitter includes extensive support for Apple’s QuickTime architecture, such as the playback of all QT supported file formats, real- or nonreal-time file creation, editing operations, import/export capabilities, integrated real-time QT effects, video digitizing, QTVR, file format conversion, and more. QuickTime audio may be routed into MSP to exploit MSP’s powerful audio processing capabilities. For the production environment, Jitter provides support for digital video (DV) camera control as well as input and output via FireWire, and multiple monitor support for performance situations.

2D/3D Graphics

Jitter’s integrated 2D/3D graphics support provides the tools to use hardware accellerated OpenGL graphics together with video, including the ability to texture 3D geometry with video streams in real-time, convert audio and video streams directly into geometry data, and render models, NURBS, 2D/3D text, and other common shapes. There is even low level access to geometry data and the majority of the OpenGL API for those who need to be closer to the machine.

Ease of Use

Jitter is tightly integrated with Cycling ’74’s Max/MSP graphical programming environment which lets you visually connect data processing objects together with patchcords to create custom applications in a similar manner to analog modular synthesizers.

This visual framework provides the power to build your own unique video effects, realtime video mixers, audio visualizers, image to audio synthesizers, algorithmic image generators, batch converter/processor programs, or whatever your heart desires. You can share the programs you develop with other Max/MSP users and create standalone applications just as is currently possible with Max/MSP. A free Runtime version is available that runs any application created with Max/MSP/Jitter.

Jitter includes interactive help files for each of its objects, detailed documentation, 37 tutorials, and a bounty of useful examples.

Matrices

Jitter’s strength and flexibility comes from the use of a single generalized matrix data format when working with video, 3D geometry, audio, text, or any other kind of data. Jitter matrices may be composed of one of four data types: char (8 bit unsigned int), long (32 bit signed int), float32 (32 bit floating point), or float64 (64 bit floating point). Matrices may have up to 32 dimensions, and may have up to 32 planes.

This common representation makes the transcoding of information effortless. You can experiment with intpreting text as an image, converting video images to 3D geometry, turning audio into a particle system, or playing video data as audio. The possibilities are unlimited.

Jitter has all the fundamental mathematical tools required to work with this numerical representation. The jit.op object alone provides over 60 arithmetic, bitwise, exponential, logical, and trigonometric operators. The multitude of operators in jit.op are particularly useful for experimenting with video compositing. And Jitter’s support for linear algebra, particle systems, Fourier analysis and resynthesis, string processing, cellular automata, and Lindenmeyer systems allows for even further experimental possibilities.

Miroslav Philharmonic Vst

Miroslav Philharmonic Vst

Though the word orchestra may conjure up images of classical music performed in a concert hall, sounds of the symphony are present in many genres of music. Pop, rock, and, of course, film scores often contain full or partial orchestras. But if you’re not named Wolfgang or Johann, how do the rest of us get our hands on a quality orchestra at a reasonable cost?

IK Multimedia addresses this problem beautifully with Miroslav Philharmonik. Recorded in Dvorak Symphony hall in Prague, this powerful seven-gigabyte sample collection of orchestra and choir sounds (derived from the Miroslav Vitous Symphonic Orchestra and Choir Sample collections) is now a virtual instrument plug-in available in most popular formats.

IK Multimedia has done a great job of balancing price, sound quality, and usability. There may be many other orchestra sample collections, but not all of them include a playback engine for easily using the sample library. Miroslav Philharmonik’s musicality and reasonable demands on both your wallet and computer’s CPU set it apart. We really enjoyed using it, and will probably do so for various recording projects in the future!

Features

Miroslav is a multi-timbral virtual instrument (soft-synth) that consists of orchestral and choir sample libraries. All major plug-in platforms are supported – VST, RTAS, and AU.

The samples, recorded by the Czech Philharmonic orchestra, include the original Miroslav Orchestra and Choir collections, plus additional previously unreleased content. The additional sounds include a concert piano and various percussion instruments – even a triangle is represented. Also in the library are a selection of other real-life sounds that are comprised of ambient noise such as coughs, musicians talking, and pre-performance tuning. The seven-gigabyte Miroslav Philharmonik ships on two DVDs that includes over 1,300 orchestral and choir sounds.

Version 1.0 required an iLok and only ran as a plug-in. Happily, the newly released version 1.1 does not require an iLok and also includes a stand-alone version of the program that runs without a host environment. Of note to Mac users, version 1.1 has Mac OS X Binary support, which allows it to run on Apple’s latest hardware.

Sixteen instruments can be played simultaneously. Each instrument can have up to four Insert effects, and there are four main Send effects (each with twenty effects choices). Miroslav Philharmonik boasts 256 notes of polyphony, which should be ample for most scoring needs. If you do find yourself running out of polyphony, just add another instance of the plug-in. Most likely you’ll be running out of processor power long before you hit the polyphonic limit.

Miroslav Philharmonik is a sample playback unit that is powered by IK Multimedia’s SampleTank 2.1 engine. Although the look has been changed to a more “orchestral” appearance, it operates in much the same way as SampleTank 2, so if you are familiar with that instrument, the learning curve will be practically non-existent.

There is a complete set of effects, also derived from Sampletank 2. However, one exception is CS Reverb, which comes from IK Multimedia’s WIHO award-winning Classic Studio Reverb (CSR) effects suite. This particular reverb is tailored to orchestra sounds, and its simplified controls include Dry/Wet and Time, which are fine in this particular application.

The interface is divided into three sections: Ensemble, Sound, and Effects.

The Ensemble section is where the sounds are layered and assembled. This is where things like MIDI channel, output channel, panning, and of course, sound names are displayed.

The Sound section is where sound design is handled. There are two LFOs, two envelopes, a filter, velocity settings, key range settings, Send settings, and tuning controls. There are also Macro controls that allow the user to control four other parameters, and those parameters change based on the selected sound.

The final section is the Effects section, which includes the CS Reverb mentioned, as well as chorus, lo-fi, distortion, EQ/compression, and delay, to name a few.

In the middle of the screen, just below the Ensemble section, is where you’ll find two rows of control knobs. The top row automatically changes name and function depending on which Sound control is selected. For example, if you click the “Env 1” button just to the left of the knobs, the top row of knobs become Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain, Release, and Level knobs. If you were to click on the “Tune” button, also to the left of the knobs, the first row of knobs automatically get re-assigned and displayed as Pitch, Fine, Bender, and Pan (with an additional mode selector switch for Re-sampling and Stretch). This auto-changing display is a welcome departure from other applications that layer multiple levels of windows to see the active controls.

The bottom row of knobs corresponds to the Effects section. Different effects will also have different control options. For example, the filter effect has controls for Frequency, Resonance, Depth, Rate, and Mode, whereas the compressor effect has controls for Attack, Release, Drive, Ratio, and Spread. Just like when editing the sound itself, the effect knobs change depending on which effect is selected. Again, this is a nice feature, as there are not windows upon windows of editing knobs and digging up the right set of active controls – it’s all right there!

Sound

The sample library includes the original Miroslav Orchestra and Choir collections, plus additional previously unreleased content. With so much material here it was easy to find something suitable for most orchestral applications.

The sounds themselves were very clean, yet still had plenty of warmth to them. Bows, strings, and breaths were each present, and did not sound artificial. Other people have describes Miroslav’s sounds as organic, and we would agree with that comment.

When selecting sounds, you have a choice between looped and un-looped versions. Not surprisingly, the un-looped samples were more natural to our ears than the looped samples, especially when dealing with wind instruments and choirs. Strings and woodwinds sounded excellent, while some of the brass sounds, good as they were, weren’t quite as natural sounding as the other instruments. We loved the included whimsical sounds.

Our reviewer had previously composed an original orchestra piece while in college, when Finale (music notation software) was still at version 2.6! After digging around, we found a MIDI file (on a floppy – remember those?) containing the nearly ten-minute composition. While the file needed more editing than time allowed during our review process, with only minimal effort at arranging sound assignments, the piece breathed new life. In fact, it hadn’t sounded like that since it was last played with a real orchestra in 1993! Miroslav indeed is a very exciting, powerful piece of software.

There were a number of sounds that caught our attention in particular. Within the “Advanced Ensembles” collection, which comprises ready-made groupings, were a few of our favorites. Though simple, the “Bass and Piano” ensemble was great – it sounded like a high quality piano and upright bass in a jazz club, which was an unexpected treat to find in an orchestra collection. The “Pop solo” ensemble was a multilayered string and piano ensemble that would work well for a big, epic pop ballad. The “Japanee” ensemble, consisting of slightly detuned metallic percussion sounds, brought a knowing smile to our face, reminding this reviewer of time he spent living in Japan.

The choir sections overall were a pleasant surprise. Very realistic sounding, these could easy be incorporated into many kinds of music. In fact, we had fun playing the choir parts of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” while singing the lead above it. These were really quite good, though we do wish a boys choir sample had been included. Though the women’s choir could easily fill that sonic role, the additional inclusion would have been a nice touch.
You can listen to examples of what Miroslav Philharmonik is capable of on the IK Multimedia website (see the link at the bottom of this review). We recommend checking out “Bach’s Badinerie” and “Dvorak’s New World Symphony”. There is also an example of how expressive layers can be used in a live setting in the file “Live Miro Combi.” Certainly, getting mixes to sound as good as these demos takes a lot of practice, but we did find that they faithfully demonstrated the sound of the product.

Miroslav Philharmonic Vst

Documentation and Product Support

The Sound manual has an introduction to the library, and includes a brief history of the man who originally recorded the sounds (legendary bassist Miroslav Vitous), and also of the hall they were recorded in (Dvorak Hall, in Prague). It also offers a kind of crash course in orchestral arranging, explaining how instruments are generally positioned in the orchestra, and their general tones and ranges. This was very useful information sure to appeal to beginning arrangers, though it doesn’t (and isn’t supposed to) take the place of a really good book on orchestral arranging or formal training.

The various control sections were explained well, and there were some examples in the manual detailing how some of the functions work.

Also included was a poster showing (graphically) the range of all the various instruments. This is particularly helpful for someone new to orchestral writing, or an aspiring student (in fact, our reviewer had to make one such chart by hand during college in preparation for composing his orchestra piece), but for more seasoned composers, it was of more limited value. Nevertheless, it was a thoughtful item to include with the manual.

Features

Quality and Performance
Steinberg’s award-winning HALion Sample Engine supports 5.1. Surround sound and audio files with resolutions ranging up to 384 kHz/32 bit. As a fully multi-timbral instrument, HALion can receive data on 16 MIDI channels simultaneously and load up to 128 programs. Each HALion instance can send up to 256 voices to up to 256 individual audio outputs*! The advanced disk streaming engine ensures fast loading times for samples as well as exceptional performance, so that even very intricate samples of complex instruments play without a problem, even from different hard disks.

Multi-samples to Infinity and Beyond
Every HALion program may entail an (in theory) unlimited number of individual samples. You can create up to 4,096 folders per program, which can be played and edited independently (for example, according to velocity) or collectively (as layers). Every program can be loaded as a subordinate folder of an existing program to create layer and complex sound combinations in a matter of seconds.

User Interface and Workflow
Remarkable ease of use and intuitive handling are two of the many hallmark advantages of HALion 3 that make this sampler such a joy to work with. Though very clearly structured, the user interface offers all the functions that professionals demand and deserve. This third incarnation of the software sampler has been optimized in many ways, particularly for tasks involving complex instruments.

Frequently recurring tasks such as mapping samples and editing modulations in the Modulation Matrix are quickly achieved. Numerous Sound Management Tools such as Favorites, Instrument Categories and Display Filters*** help you keep track of tasks and find sounds quickly – even if your sample collection is enormous.

What’s more, HALion offers various functions for streamlining workflows, including user-definable key commands and movable, scalable windows that let you keep a watchful eye on vital editing panels.

You can save core features such as envelopes, modulations and effects as presets and reactivate them in a flash. Courtesy of the informative tool tips, GUI functions are largely self-explanatory.

Macro Page
The Macro Page in HALion is the perfect tool for swiftly selecting programs, adding effects and performing basic editing tasks. Though you’ll find more extensive sound-sculpting options in other editors, the Macro Page affords you fast access to crucial parameters such as envelopes, filters and LFOs

Sample Formats
Whatever sampler you may have relied on in the past, HALion lets you reuse your sample CDs. Compatible with nearly all sample libraries available on the market, it speaks the lingo of AKAI, E-MU, Kontakt, Kurzweil, Roland, GIGA, EXS24, SF2, LM4, LM4 MkII, REX, ZGR (ZeroX BeatCreator), WAV, AIF and SD II (Mac only).

Another very welcome feature, HALion not only loads samples from physical disk drives, it even accesses ISO files and Nero Disc images directly without having to burn them first.

Integrated Sound Library
The included HALion 3 Library contains more than 160 meticulously sampled instruments for almost every application. Look no further for hip drums, strings, pianos, guitars, basses and synthesizers. The sound library is clearly organized and arranged in instrument categories, making it very easy to find the perfect sound for the occasion. Every instrument in the integrated HALion 3.1 sound library offers preset Q controls to facilitate fast and intuitive sound design.

File Browser
The powerful File Browser in HALion lets you conveniently search the contents of sample CDs/DVDs or (external and internal) hard disks for suitable samples. You can audition sample programs, copy them to hard disk, manage files and folders, define favorites and assign programs and folders to specific instrument categories.

The Auto Browse function lets you search for HALion-supported file types in selected partitions and folders. Courtesy of the efficient database and indexing functions, you can scan the entire sample collection using keywords and categories to locate suitable sounds very swiftly, regardless of which storage medium they happen to reside on. Beyond that, you may filter searches according to program category, file type and/or text info.

You can also opt to open the file browser in a separate scalable window. Sound libraries featuring HALion Sound Bank (HSB) format are loaded automatically with the corresponding instrument categories.

RAMSave Technology
RAMSave is an innovative new technology designed to automatically boost the performance of HALion. When you work with large sample programs such orchestra combinations or drum kits, frequently only a fraction of the loaded samples is actually used. When RAMSave is enabled, HALion automatically dumps all samples that are not used in the current song from the main memory. To this end, it scans the MIDI notes and deletes all samples that are not assigned to any of these notes. This lightens the RAM’s load and ensures faster loading times.

Effect Section
To put even more creative sound-shaping options at your fingertips, HALion 3 ships with an extensive new effect section featuring a rich selection of 27 inspiring effects in the finest audio quality. Courtesy of the terrific Routing Matrix, HALion 3 offers utmost flexibility in effects mapping: Up to four insert effects, program inserts and global send effects are at your disposal. The good news gets even better: You are free to assign each effect to an individual sample, a program or even the entire bank. And you can patch send effect outputs to any virtual HALion output. Covering the full range of standard studio effects, the effect program offering extends from subtle reverb and EQs to guitar stomp-box FX such as auto wah and distortion.

Modulation
If you’re looking for greater flexibility and control in your modulation options, you’ve come to the right place: HALion 3 and its Modulation Matrix let you define up to twelve different modulation assignments. You may assign all internal and external modulation sources (LFOs, Velocity, Envelopes, Modulation Wheel, Pitch Wheel, and so forth) freely to the modulation destination of your choice (for example, Cutoff, Volume, Pan, Pitch or Sample Start). As you would expect from a VST instrument, you can of course use one modulation source to control several parameters simultaneously. What’s more, for even more intuitive sound design any MIDI controller can be assigned to any modulation effect.

The MegaTrig function lets you engage controllers or keys to switch among different sample programs. This feature comes in quite handy when you want to spice up a track with added variety, say by playing variations of the same instruments (perhaps by picking one bass line with a pick, the other with “fingers” or by using different articulations for a string section). Five different Release Trigger modes and Crossfades are available to tweak every changeover to your taste.

The Alternate function lets you assign several sample variations to each note so that a slightly different sample is played for every attack. This injects a fresh, human feel into every line, which is especially beneficial in conjuring realistic strings and percussion instruments.

The envelopes in HALion comprise up to 32 editable steps that let you map modulation envelopes step by step. When the Sync counter is activated, the Step envelope is synched up to the host application’s tempo – that’s all it takes to create modulations that groove in time with the beat.

Q Controls
The freely configurable Q Control knobs afford you instant access to up to eight parameters. You can assign Q controls individually to every HALion program. In the event of program change, they will change their assignments automatically. Many new sound libraries offered by leading sample vendors feature predefined Q controls for the given instrument’s crucial parameters. Though your Q control settings are stored with the program or bank, you can also access them as separate presets.

MIDI Learn
With the practical MIDI Learn function, you can assign each of the eight Q control knobs to a MIDI controller in a matter of seconds. Very handy indeed, MIDI Learn is a powerful tool granting you convenient real-time control over sound parameters using any desired external MIDI device.

Original Waldorf Filters
HALion 3 ships with filters provided by Waldorf, the legendary synthesizer manufacturer. Featuring the unique Fatness parameter, these classic high-, low- and band-pass filters excel at delivering sumo-sized tone with breadth and warmth unrivalled by any sound found on other software samplers.

Excellent Compatibility
HALion 3 supports all standard plug-in formats such as VST, DXi, AU and Rewire and integrates smoothly and seamlessly into every professional host application. A standalone version is available for live scenarios and similar applications.

HSB – HALion Sound Bank
A hip new feature that debuted with HALion 3, HSB serves as a playback format for HALion 3 and HALion Player. An HSB file may contain up to 128 programs and an unlimited number of individual samples. Today many reputable sample vendors offer sample libraries in HSB format, which are very easy to install. Alongside the actual sample content, the HSB format accommodates instrument categories descriptive remarks, copyright info and other meta information.

Installation Notes:

1) Unrar and mount or burn.
